About the role
- Inkittt is seeking an Associate Editor to diagnose narrative issues using manuscripts, reader feedback, and engagement data, and to write clear editorial plans for major rewrites.
- The role involves executing rewrites in collaboration with authors and agentic AI tools, testing revisions, and building relationships across teams to improve each book.
Responsibilities
- Read deeply and diagnose where and why a story loses readers using the manuscript, reader feedback and engagement data.
- Write clear, bold editorial plans for major rewrites including new hooks, reworked arcs, sharper character motivation, and payoffs.
- Execute rewrites in collaboration with authors and agentic AI tools.
- Run reader tests on revisions, interpret the results, and carry learnings into the next book.
- Build relationships with authors, freelance editors, marketing, and the wider content team.
Requirements
- Love romance, read widely in it, know the tropes, heat levels, and subgenres, and have strong opinions on why readers keep coming back.
- Possess sharp editorial instincts to identify why a story isn’t working and how to fix it.
- Be a creative thinker with big story ideas, excited to reinvent a book rather than just repair it.
- Be comfortable developing creative theories from quantitative data, forming a hypothesis from reader data, and explaining it clearly.
- Be excited to use AI as a creative tool, with the taste to judge what it produces and make it better.
- Be smart, curious, and hungry, learning fast, taking ownership, and wanting real responsibility early.
- Have 1-3 years in editorial or publishing, an MFA, or similar.
- Work on-site in San Francisco 5 days a week.
