About the role
- The Backend Engineer will join the Repository Management team to build secure, reliable solutions for configuring repositories.
- The role involves working on critical system infrastructure, including Gitaly and the interface layer for Git repositories.
- Engineers will incorporate AI agents into daily workflows to drive efficiency and build guardrails for safe development.
Responsibilities
- Develop secure, well-tested, and performant features using Ruby and GraphQL.
- Deliver solutions for complex requirements and legacy constraints while protecting system reliability.
- Contribute to backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for repository management.
- Collaborate across functions and teams using both asynchronous and synchronous communication.
- Utilize AI agents for well-scoped work and critically review their output.
- Write maintainable code following company standards and apply feedback from code reviews.
- Monitor production health metrics and participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations.
- Troubleshoot incidents, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency.
- Share knowledge through technical documentation and code reviews.
Requirements
- Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs.
- Experience with or ability to learn Ruby and GraphQL.
- Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, and background processing.
- Experience contributing to policy, permissions, or rules-based features in web applications.
- Experience writing backend unit and integration tests.
- Familiarity with Git and collaborative code review processes.
- Experience using AI coding tools or agents with the ability to review their output.
- Clear written and spoken English communication skills.
- Ability to manage priorities, work through ambiguity, and take ownership of work.
