About the role

  • As a Production Development Engineering Intern (Co-op) at Clutch, you will tackle unique operational engineering problems within a fast-paced automotive reconditioning facility.
  • You will own one main project from start to finish, such as designing standardized work, analyzing bottlenecks, improving facility layouts, or supporting capital projects, while presenting your achievements to the executive team.

Responsibilities

  • Time-study a process within production areas like Inspection, Mechanical, or Detail, separate value-adding steps, and write standard work.
  • Use production data to map cycle time and wait time across stations, find bottlenecks, and test fixes on the floor.
  • Break down why cars fail QC or require rework, identify top causes, and implement measurable changes with mechanics and leads.
  • Redesign a bay or work area in CAD and make the data-backed case for it.
  • Help scope equipment or facility projects by gathering vendor quotes and tracking timelines and budgets.
  • Present your achievements and project results to the executive team and engineering leadership at the end of your co-op.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Management, Systems Design, or a related engineering program.
  • Comfortable working with data in Excel or Google Sheets, including pivot tables, charts, and basic formulas.
  • Some exposure to CAD such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, or similar through coursework, a design team, or a previous co-op.
  • Happy to spend a large part of your day on a shop floor, asking mechanics questions and listening to their answers.
  • Clear communicator who can explain a recommendation to both an operator and a director.

Preferred qualifications

  • A previous co-op in manufacturing, automotive, logistics, or operations.
  • Coursework in operations research, lean manufacturing, or statistics (SPC, Pareto).
  • Experience on a student design team, such as Formula Electric or Midnight Sun.
  • Python or SQL experience, or experience using AI tools to speed up analysis.
