About the role
- Tala is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their Product Development team to build and extend backend architecture for global credit infrastructure.
- This role involves owning systems and initiatives within a domain, setting technical approaches, and leading the development of a scalable, reliable microservices platform.
- The position requires cross-functional collaboration across global time zones and provides opportunities for technical leadership and mentorship.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services, APIs, and data integration layers.
- Author and defend design documents (EDDs) for services within the domain.
- Optimize database schemas and queries for performance and reliability.
- Define alerting, SLIs, and SLOs to proactively improve system availability and response times.
- Lead the technical response for domain incidents and write RCAs.
- Own the delivery of domain roadmap work and participate in sprint planning.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and lead a team of backend engineers.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across development and production environments.
- Collaborate with Product and business stakeholders to define feature success and remove ambiguity.
- Verify AI-assisted code changes to the same standard as hand-written code.
Requirements
- Fluency in English with clear written communication skills.
- Hands-on experience designing, building, and operating applications in Java, Kotlin, or Scala.
- Experience with a web framework such as Spring.
- Track record of leading and delivering multiple domain-significant projects in production.
- Experience with large-scale consumer applications on cloud infrastructure (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure) using microservices.
- Expert knowledge of REST API design and development.
- Strong relational database experience (MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MS SQL).
- Strong non-relational database experience (Cassandra, Redshift, DynamoDB, or HDFS).
- Expert proficiency in the Agile development process.
- Knowledge of ISO-27001, ISO-27701, and OWASP secure coding practices.
