About the role
- The Senior Controls Engineer will join the Hardware Platform Organization to develop shared technologies and infrastructure for Anduril's diverse hardware systems.
- This role focuses on motor control algorithm development, high-fidelity modeling, and embedded firmware implementation for defense applications.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement FOC, six-step commutation, and direct torque control algorithms for BLDC and PMSM motors.
- Develop sensorless rotor position estimation techniques for applications where Hall sensors or encoders are not viable.
- Design current, speed, and position control loops with rigorous bandwidth, stability, and disturbance rejection specifications.
- Build high-fidelity motor and inverter plant models in MATLAB/Simulink.
- Execute Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing using Embedded Coder auto-generated C code.
- Support Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) integration with real-time simulators for controller board validation.
- Implement motor control firmware in C on microcontrollers with hard real-time constraints.
- Configure and optimize motor control peripherals including PWM timers, ADC synchronization, and encoder/Hall interfaces.
- Architect firmware for deterministic control loop execution, including interrupt prioritization and DMA pipelines.
- Implement fault detection, diagnosis, and safe-state management in firmware.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent.
- 8+ years of professional experience designing and implementing motor control algorithms for BLDC or PMSM motors.
- Strong foundation in classical and modern control theory, including PID tuning, frequency-domain analysis, and state estimation.
- Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and PLECS for control design and auto-code generation.
- Deep experience writing production-quality embedded code on microcontrollers with hard real-time motor control loops.
- Perform Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) integration with real-time simulators.
- Working knowledge of power electronics, including three-phase inverter operation and PWM schemes.
- Hands-on experience with motor control peripherals and communication protocols like CAN, SPI, I2C, and UART.
- Strong bench skills using oscilloscopes, current probes, and dynamometers.
- U.S. Person status is required to access export-controlled data (ITAR/EAR).
Preferred qualifications
- Master's or PhD with thesis work in motor control, power electronics, or electric machine design.
- Experience with sensorless control techniques at low speed and standstill (HFI, pulsating voltage injection).
- Experience with SiC or GaN power device integration and high-switching-frequency inverter design.
- Experience with real-time simulation platforms like dSPACE, OPAL-RT, or Typhoon HIL.
- Background in defense, automation, automotive, aerospace, or robotics motor control applications.
- Experience with thermal modeling of motors and inverters, I2t protection, and derating algorithms.
- Active or ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
