About the role
- The Senior EMC Design and Compliance Engineer will join the Electrical Engineering Design team to collaborate on system-level electromagnetic compatibility.
- This role involves defining EMC requirements, designing test strategies, and independently executing or supervising EMC testing at internal and third-party labs.
- The position requires a balance of hands-on testing expertise and design-level advisory skills regarding PCB layouts, schematics, and shielding.
Responsibilities
- Define product, module, and interface-level EMC requirements.
- Develop pre-compliance and compliance test strategies.
- Own and operate the local EMC lab.
- Plan, execute, supervise, and troubleshoot EMC testing including MIL-STD-461 RE102/RS103 and MIL-STD-464C field-level requirements.
- Evaluate test data and correlate emission failures with root causes using measurement and simulation data.
- Implement effective design countermeasures for EMC issues.
- Communicate findings and design trade-offs to internal stakeholders and external suppliers.
- Negotiate design changes and schedules when EMC issues arise.
- Travel up to 20% to supervise and support test campaigns.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464 EMC test methods and requirements.
- Experience with radiated and conducted emissions/immunity testing from pre-compliance through full compliance.
- Hands-on experience with EMC test equipment including EMI receivers, signal generators, power amplifiers, LISNs, current probes, and antennas.
- Experience managing or maintaining an EMC test lab including equipment calibration and test capability planning.
- Working knowledge of PCB layout, stack-up, and flex circuit design related to EMC and signal integrity.
- Familiarity with shielding materials, conductive/non-conductive coatings, and grounding/bonding practices.
- Strong root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to communicate findings across engineering disciplines.
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a clearance.
Preferred qualifications
- Review schematics, CAD designs, and cable terminations for EMC risk.
- Provide technical guidance on PCB component selection, floor planning, stack-ups, shielding, and grounding/bonding strategies.
- Experience with EM simulation tools such as Ansys HFSS, Altair FEKO, or CST Studio Suite.
