About the role
- The Senior Platform Operations and Network Engineer will operate and improve the infrastructure connecting Upwork’s engineers, services, and operating environments. This role focuses on the reliability, automation, and lifecycle management of cloud and network infrastructure, helping to unify traditional and Kubernetes-based operating models.
Responsibilities
- Operate and improve shared Cloud infrastructure across multiple providers, accounts, and environments.
- Manage infrastructure lifecycle including provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, capacity planning, and recovery testing.
- Build and maintain reusable infrastructure using Terraform Enterprise or Terraform Cloud.
- Use configuration management tools like Chef or Ansible to maintain consistent systems.
- Improve infrastructure reliability through monitoring, alerting, and operational runbooks.
- Participate in production on-call rotation and lead complex infrastructure incident response.
- Own and improve network infrastructure including VPCs, routing, DNS, load balancing, firewalls, and VPNs.
- Operate EKS infrastructure including cluster lifecycle, autoscaling, networking, and storage integration.
- Support infrastructure controls for security reviews, audits, and SOX compliance.
- Build operational tooling in Python, Go, or Bash to reduce manual work.
Requirements
- Deep experience operating production infrastructure across multiple cloud providers, accounts, and environments.
- Advanced Terraform expertise including reusable module design and drift remediation.
- Strong knowledge of Linux systems and infrastructure lifecycle management.
- Strong network engineering experience across cloud and corporate environments.
- Deep hands-on experience operating Kubernetes and Amazon EKS at scale.
- Experience diagnosing failures across infrastructure, operating systems, Kubernetes, and network boundaries.
- Experience with infrastructure and network observability and incident response.
- Strong automation and scripting skills in Python, Go, or Bash.
- Working knowledge of security, audit, and compliance requirements in production environments.
- Ability to make sound technical decisions and influence engineers across organizational boundaries.
