About the role
- The Design Systems team at Discord manages 'Mana,' a design system used by product designers, engineers, and creatives to ensure quality across UI, content, and graphics.
- This role focuses on the stewardship of Mana, involving the maintenance, evolution, and scaling of components, tokens, and patterns as the product grows.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and evolve Mana's foundational tokens, components, and patterns.
- Triage and fix bugs, ship updates, and keep Figma and code in sync.
- Migrate and deprecate legacy elements.
- Build and refine components in Figma with attention to structure, variants, properties, and variables.
- Prioritize maintenance and evolution work while shaping contribution and governance models.
- Explore the use of AI, including skills and agents, to improve system maintenance and scalability.
- Provide support to product teams through help channels and collaborative contributions.
- Extend the visual language to new components and surfaces in collaboration with engineering.
- Educate and evangelize the system through documentation, tutorials, and interactive prototypes.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in UX or product design.
- 2+ years of experience working on design systems, including maintenance, documentation, and support.
- Mastery of Figma component building, including variants, component properties, auto layout, variables, and library management.
- Working knowledge of front-end code and how components are built.
- Experience with GitHub and Markdown.
- Hands-on experience using AI in a design systems context.
- Strong visual judgment and craft across Web, Desktop, iOS, and Android platforms.
- Experience with inclusive design and accessibility standards (WCAG).
- Ability to ground feedback in reasoning and communicate effectively in a cross-functional environment.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience planning and leading migrations or deprecations of legacy components across a large product.
- Experience working in a design system that is co-owned by design and engineering.
