About the role
- Toast is seeking a highly skilled, AI-native Senior Product Designer to lead the experience for Toast Retail, helping make it faster and easier for retailers to get started.
- The role involves leading design for Toast Retail's Experience Platform team in Dublin, working day to day with product and engineering partners across Dublin and the U.S.
- As a senior designer, you will set design direction with a high degree of autonomy, turning product strategy into seamless setup and onboarding experiences.
Responsibilities
- Take your product area from early discovery through shipped UI, setting its design direction and quality bar while connecting each workflow to the broader Toast Retail vision.
- Use AI prototyping tools such as Replit, Magic Patterns, or Claude to build working, interactive prototypes with realistic data for customer and engineer testing.
- Design AI-first workflows that materially reduce customer effort, including importing, cleaning up, and enriching store item data, while handling low-confidence results and user corrections.
- Engage directly in research with retailers, onboarding, and support teams to understand setup breakdowns and translate insights into testable design ideas.
- Turn large catalogs, imports, bulk edits, and errors into experiences that are clear, forgiving, and fast across desktop and mobile.
- Partner closely with product managers and engineers in Dublin and the U.S. by sharing work early and communicating rationale clearly.
- Deliver pixel-perfect UI, apply and extend the Toast design system, mentor other designers, and contribute to wider Retail design practices.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to lead design for a complex product area end to end, craft compelling visual experiences, and connect work to a broader product vision.
- AI is part of your daily workflow, using tools like Claude, Replit, or Magic Patterns to research, explore, and prototype working models.
- Solid understanding of UX principles and best practices for both web and native mobile applications, alongside a strong grasp of platform-specific UX and UI patterns.
- Ability to navigate ambiguous, undefined problem spaces, frame the right problem, and initiate work efficiently across time zones.
- Strong communication skills, a proactive mindset for sharing work early, and the ability to present work persuasively to senior leaders.
- Proficient in design software, preferably Figma, including maintaining clean files and delivering pixel-perfect final UI designs for handoff.
- Able to take feedback constructively, pivot quickly, and give generous, clear feedback to help other designers grow.
- Strong ability to understand and empathize with users, designing digital experiences that delight within stressful or monotonous workflows.
- Familiarity with corporate design systems, knowing when to apply them appropriately and when innovation requires pushing beyond them.
- Willingness to engage directly with customers to gather feedback and generate ideas for advancing product features.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience designing data-heavy operational or B2B software, such as onboarding, data import, product information management, or point-of-sale tools.
- Experience designing AI or machine-learning features that include human review, confidence, or correction.
- Design system experience, including creation and maintenance.
- Experience contributing directly to a production codebase alongside engineers, for example opening pull requests for UI/UX changes.
- Prior experience in a startup environment or on zero-to-one projects.
Workplace
