About the role
- This position is needed to power the future of communications by developing the connectivity, compliance and rich messaging features required to enable adoption of new messaging channels and drive continued growth of existing channels such as WhatsApp, RCS and Facebook Messenger.
- We are looking for candidates passionate about designing, developing, deploying and operating software solutions at scale to help Twilio deliver the best user experience for modern, rich messaging.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance REST APIs and backend microservices using Java and Go.
- Build and enhance rich messaging features, managing high-throughput message routing and delivery pipelines.
- Deploy and support backend services in AWS (open to Azure/GCP experience), prioritizing system reliability, low latency, and fault tolerance.
- Actively integrate AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) into your daily workflow to accelerate output and elevate code quality.
- Support team on-call rotations to maintain high availability and operational excellence for critical communications services.
- Partner asynchronously across distributed engineering teams using clear technical written and verbal communication.
Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on software development experience building backend services in Java or Go
- Experience designing and building production RESTful APIs as a core part of your day-to-day role
- Experience operating distributed systems on top of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred, or equivalent experience with Azure/GCP)
- Hands-on use of AI development tools (e.g. Claude, Copilot) to streamline coding, debugging or documentation
- Strong written and verbal technical communication skills
- Ability to participate in on-call rotation (includes weekends and holidays)
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with NoSQL datastores (e.g. DynamoDB)
- Experience with message queuing (e.g. Simple Queue Service)
- Experience deploying and supporting containerized applications in Kubernetes
- Prior experience with telecom or rich messaging platforms (RCS, SMS/MMS, OTT messaging)
