About Gusto
- At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.
- All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
- AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.
About the role
- Gusto is seeking Staff Product Designers across Money and HR Experience product organizations to own experiences end-to-end within specific domains.
- Designers will turn ambiguity into clear, trustworthy products, helping define new patterns and driving design decisions in partnership with Product Managers and Engineers.
Responsibilities
- Own design end to end in your domain from framing ambiguous problems to shipping high-craft, accessible experiences.
- Shape goals, priorities, and roadmap in partnership with your PM and engineering lead.
- Translate ambiguous, often 0-1 strategy into clear scopes, flows, and interaction patterns.
- Design the experience of AI thoughtfully, representing uncertainty, surfacing errors gracefully, and preserving customer agency.
- Ground your decisions in customer insight, leading or partnering on research, competitive audits, and hypothesis-driven exploration.
- Raise the craft and systems bar, evolving Gusto's design system where existing patterns fall short.
- Work in fast cycles and use AI tools in your own practice to prototype and ship real things to customers.
Requirements
- 6+ years of product design experience owning and shipping end-to-end work, ideally in B2B SaaS, fintech, or another high-trust domain, with strong craft across web.
- Experience designing AI-enabled or conversational experiences shipped to real users.
- Comfort with ambiguity and 0-1 problem framing.
- Strong systems thinking, using and contributing to a design system and knowing when to evolve it.
- Judgment to evaluate and direct AI outputs and how to raise the bar where the cost of being wrong is high.
- Strong collaboration and communication across design, product, engineering, and data.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience in a high-stakes or regulated domain, fintech, financial services, HR, compliance, legal, or healthcare.
- Hands-on experience designing AI-driven or agentic product experiences.
- Service-design fluency across two-sided or multi-stakeholder products.
- Helped lead a team's shift to AI-native workflows.
- Background contributing to AI governance, evaluation practices, or AI experience design patterns.
